Why the dots matter…

Have you ever wondered why insert manufacturers put different types of markings on the front face of the insert? Most do not know that those are critical to the performance and that there’s a VERY simple “trick” to get free tool life!If you look at the face of the milling insert, for example, ENMX0604 YG602, there’s a dot and a circle. This dot is not a decoration, but fulfills a very important function that goes back to how inserts are manufactured. In the manufacturing process, all inserts are aligned with the dot in the same location/direction. This is how tolerances are controlled, which has a direct impact on functional tool life.
